So to help keep the old noggins in tip top condition, we’re hitting up some of our favourite creative mates to find out what inspires them and how they fire up their creativity (so we can steal all their cool ideas and share them with you).
We’re calling this WONDERBRAINS.
Next up is our pal Keshi, who describes himself as an “exceptionally brilliant, high functioning brand design consultant with a penchant for crazy ideas that help change the world and other people’s perspectives. Prone to slight exaggeration…”
We asked Keshi…
What excites you?
Frost on glass, technology that feels like magic, snowboarding, science fiction movies, chocolate ice-cream, ephemera and white sand beaches.
What scares you?
People’s inability to see things from other people’s perspectives. Boris Johnson’s hair, reality tv shows and small pumpkins and gourds… warty little shits
What inspires you?
Simplicity – when you strip away all the layers of noise, bullshit and needless clutter, to find that single-minded, elegant idea that talks to you on another level, stops you dead in your tracks and makes you say ‘I wish I’d thought of that.’
One of my all-time favourite pieces of graphic design that does this is ‘I ♥ NY’ by one of the greatest graphic designers ever, Milton Glaser.
It’s so simple, yet so effective. It’s probably one of the most well-known and copied designs ever in the world but when it was released in 1977 the logo was so startlingly new and different. No one had ever thought to combine letters and symbols in this way before.
Some years later, in a post 911 New York, Glaser released a reimagined version of his iconic “I ♥ NY” logo with the appendage, “more than ever.” Capturing the sentiment of so many New Yorkers and people around the world.
The craziest part about both pieces of work, Glaser didn’t make a penny from either design!
Your top tip for getting creative
Step away from the computer and out of your comfort zone as often as you can. Inspiration can be found everywhere and anywhere – you just have to open your eyes and look up, down, in, around, above and underneath to find it.
